Four of us met up here for Sunday lunch, to precede a trip up the impressive Spinnaker Tower. “Loch Fyne” has built up a chain of restaurants over the past 20 years and they now operate in 33 locations, generally in unusual and historic buildings. The company has strong values (see the excellent website) and menus are based largely on fresh seafood.
The Portsmouth restaurant is situated in a fabulous waterside location at Gunwharf Quays and whilst, on this occasion it was a little too breezy to enjoy the alfresco option the contemporary interior design and window table allowed us to enjoy the light and modern ambience. The welcome we received from the young team was very warm and we were happy to enjoy drinks and peruse menus in the comfort of the cosy bar.
As we are all Fish lovers we were able to satisfy our appetites without the need to move into the more restricted Meat or Vegetarian options. Despite there being a wide range of choices on both the Fixed Price and A La Carte menus we all independently chose the same starter, Roast Salmon with Potato Salad – a delicious light dish. Mains were, Trout Fillet with Pesto x 2 and (Fish of the Day) Sea Bass x 2 – all of good quality although the Trout Fillets were on the slightly meagre side. We were more expansive with the desserts, choosing a Sticky Toffee Pud, Panacotta, Citrus Cheesecake and a Lemon Tart – all delicious. Coffees were taken at the table, the ladies then shopped whilst the lads “snapped”, and finally the Tower was scaled.
Gunwharf Quays http://www.gunwharf-quays.com/ is a great location, with a selection of more than 20 “eateries” to choose from (see other reviews on our site), not to mention Shops, Spinnaker Tower and other attractions. Loch Fyne is a good restaurant choice for those who want to specialise in Fish, particularly suitable as a lunchtime venue, leaving you “room” to do other things afterwards.
