The Rockstone has been talked about a lot in the local press since opening 2 years ago so thought we’d better try it! It’s a very busy pub and a table should always be booked. Previously called the Bevois Castle, the Rockstone is tucked between Onslow Road and Rockstone Rd. Their website calls it “a country pub in the centre of town”! No car park, so street parking or a small public car park towards Portswood.
So from a variety of steaks, burgers, and the specials board we chose a Ham Hockalypse Now at £13.50 and I decided on a rump steak from the Natural Born Grillers Menu at £13.50. The steak came topped with garlic and butter, garnish of salad, fries, and fried onion rings. I asked for medium rare and got medium but it was OK. The ham hock was large and very salty and took a long time to eat! The food is freshly cooked so don’t expect speedy service, we waited about 45 mins. However, it was very busy being a Sunday lunchtime!
We both decided we wished we’d gone for the burger, as this seemed to be the most popular food coming out of the kitchen! The Rockstone Classic burger is £12.50 and served with grilled bacon, topped with American burger cheese, fries and garnish. The burgers range from £10.50 – £14.50. Quarter pound veggie burger is £12.50 with slices of grilled aubergine, courgette, pepper and cheese. (They don’t do a Sunday Roast.)
I guess Max the owner is the wit behind the menu; you must read it on their website, just love the names of some of the food on offer!
All desserts are £4.50 and they also serve Purbeck Ice Cream, various flavours and sizes. We shared a one scoop honey and ginger at £1.95. Local Dorset honey and sticky stem ginger made it a yummy mix. Coffee came in big mugs and was OK if you like it weak! We accompanied our food with a bottle of house red, an Italian Merlot at £10 so good value.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Check out their web-site for the Live Music Nights, specials, etc. Quiz night is Mondays. Review SM
