November 2014 I recently visited this restaurant with 4 friends and I am in total agreement with the last review.  The price has risen by only £1 for the Simply Bertie 2 and 3 courses menu, which includes a glass of wine; it is still really good value. The food is very high quality and the portion size is good! We all chose from this menu.Three decided on the warm goats cheese salad and two the soup of the day which was mushroom.  For our main courses four had the belly pork with Savoy cabbage and Dauphinoise potatoes and I had the fish of the day – homemade salmon fish cake, topped with a poached egg,  yummy chips and salad.  We all had a glass of Merlot.

No puddings, just coffees at £2.90. It arrived with a lovely little dish of a small piece of shortbread each and a small square of rich choccy!   A really nice touch, we were offered a refill of coffee and it was proper coffee…. how many restaurants do that??

We actually parked at the rear of the restaurant but be warned its a tight gap to get in to and there are not many spaces.

Happy to keep the markings the same as before.   Reported by SM

November 2013 As it was such a long time since we had lunched at this very popular and long established Romsey restaurant we thought it about time we rectified this. Delighted we did, we had a very enjoyable lunch; great food and very good service in lovely surroundings! It has recently been redecorated; the exterior looks so inviting, we loved the interior colours and the conservatory (an ideal room for a private party) has a fabulous new mural.

Dulla the very attentive maître d’ showed the three of us to a window table, ordered us a G&T (perfectly served, separate bottles of tonic!) and then left us to make the difficult decisions from the menus. As usual we mixed and matched.

Our starters: from the A la Carte, JI chose Fresh fig stuffed with mozzarella wrapped in air cured ham, roasted with a mixed pickled radish salad. From the amazing Simply Berties Menu (such great value, £13.95 for 2 courses, £17.95 for 3 courses and both include a 125ml glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot!) SA chose a Fresh prawn salad with baby gems and spiced aioli and my choice was Grilled goats cheese with honeyed pear and pickled grape purée.

Our mains: From the Light lunch menu, Berties famous salmon and dill fishcakes with a beurre blanc and poached hen’s egg and Trio of local pork sausages with buttered cabbage and mash. From Simply Berties, Slow cooked pork belly with a pistachio and black pudding slice, chicory marmalade, garlic sliced potato.

We thoroughly enjoyed all our the starters in fact they were outstanding. I did find for my taste the sauce with the trio of sausages a little sweet and SA thought that with her deliciously rich dish of belly pork and crackling plain potato would have been preferable to one with a creamy sauce. But we are being picky; the food was of a very high standard, generous portions and very well presented.

The puds were to die for.. we shared Dark chocolate cheese cake with clotted ice cream and one of the best puds I can remember, Carrot cake with candied pineapple.. yummy! We finished with coffees.

Just found out from their website that Berties used to be a women’s work house in the early 17th century… almost makes you feel guilty that it is now such a pleasurable destination for hard working Ladies who Lunch!

Berties is highly recommended, booking advised. They also have bedrooms; an ideal location for any events in the area or just for a lovely break. Cost: £££££

Please help to spread the word by telling any restaurants you visit that you tried them because you were recommended by LWL in Hampshire… Thank you!
