silver LWL Silver Award – Awarded December 2012- Cost ££££

On Wednesday 4 of us and 2 friends met up at Milton Barns for lunch. The 2 friends who live in New Milton wanted us to try it a couple of months ago but it was closed for a wedding at the time; I’m pleased we’ve made it at last. This is a lovely venue now under new ownership. It’s a Grade 2 listed barn conversion offering excellent facilities and in a unique location very near to The New Forest Country Park and the Dorset beaches.

New owners Morash and Maggie are keen to use the best free range locally sourced produce from places they know and trust. Their food (British Contemporary cuisine) and their small menu of freshly cooked dishes reflect this.

Although they do breakfasts, morning coffees, lunches and afternoon teas their business mainly comes from weddings and functions. They say their home is your home so why not use it when you need to entertain a lot of people!

It would be a beautiful setting for a wedding and at the moment they have an amazing offer of £500 for a midweek wedding! There are terms & conditions so you need to phone them for details. There are lots of wedding photos on their Facebook page, Milton Barns.

The first thing we enjoyed was Marosh’s Festive Punch, his own recipe using warmed cider, apple juice and spices, very seasonal! We then ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio at £15.95.

None of us had a starter but our mains were: Dorset Fish & Chips, (catch of the day was Cod), Forest Sausage & Mash, Homemade Pie of the Day, one beef & ale and one chicken & mushroom and one Roast Turkey with the trimmings. They all tasted very good, the chips were the best we have ever tasted (!) and the portions were plentiful.

The homemade puddings were a triumph: Bread & Butter Pudding, Chocolate Brownie & Ice-cream £3.95, Blueberry Cheese Cake and Mille Feuille, yum yum! We finished with coffee and homemade truffles.

Soon their new website will be up and running but in the mean time they have some excellent Christmas offers: Turkey Pie only £5.95 and a 2 course Christmas lunch special only £9.95 to include free festive punch or mulled wine! They are even doing a Festive Afternoon Tea.

As our friends often have relatives coming to stay we asked to see the bedrooms; they are spacious, well decorated and their rates are very reasonable. There is a central courtyard for al fresco dining.

We recommend you try Milton Barns but think booking is essential as they may have a wedding or function booking.

Cost £££

Please help to spread the word by telling any restaurants you visit that you tried them because you were recommended by LWL in Hampshire… Thank you!
