La Perle is a family owned French bistro restaurant which serves classic French dishes prepared by chef/owner Lionel Sene. Lionel has quite a pedigree having trained and worked in Michelin starred restaurants across Europe and locally at Chewton Glen and Pebble Beach. He met his English wife Emily in Australia and this is their first venture. Lionel provides authentic French cuisine using fresh and locally sourced produce, Emily is the ever smiling front of house! It is tiny and the décor charming.  They are open Tuesdays – Saturdays for lunch and dinner (see times on their website) but for 6 weeks in the summer holidays they will also be open on Mondays. (Starting next week, Monday 23rd July 2012). They have an A la Carte Menu, a Specials Board and a £10 Lunch prix fixe menu which includes 1 course and a drink or a small glass of wine. Our starters were Tian of crab, cucumber, chilli & mango coulis, L’escargot au beurre Persillé garlic butter snails  and Soup de Poisson, fish soup, rouille, gratted cheese, croutons. They were all delicious and we also enjoyed the excellent homemade bread that was served with them.

Two chose their mains from the £10 menu: Steak hachée & frites and Croque Monsieur, French fries & mixed salad, both tasty and generous portions so very good value for money especially as the G&T’s two of us had to start with were included as the drink with the £10 menu.I ordered from the Specials Board, Cassoulet de Toulouse and I had a side dish of Green beans with shallots & garlic. This was one of the most authentic cassoulets I have ever tasted! SA also chose from the Specials Board, Fillet of Seabass, tomato compote, fennel confit, saffron turned potatoes, and tapenade. We drank a very moreish Viognier-Marsanne, Rare Vineyards, Pays d’Oc, France 2010 @ £17.95, shame we were driving!

The puddings were stunning! We shared a Tart tatin, honey & ice cream and Blackcurrant, crème fraîche & almond tart, strawberry & basil coulis and also an unusual Selection of French cheeses. The cheeses were helpfully labelled with a little blackboard; the names written in the same order they were on the plate. We loved tasting cheeses that were new to us.

With this standard of food it is not surprising that they were very busy so booking is highly recommended. It is obviously a very popular venue for the locals, always a good sign!

A nice touch, Lionel comes around every table for a chat at the end of service. We wish this charming and very hard working couple continued success, they deserve it and we highly recommend La Perle!
